Do letters look smaller on a high resolution monitor than a low resolution monitor?

The letter size varies depending on the screen size and resolution. As a reference, a 20.1 inch wide monitor (1680 x 1050) has letter size equivalent to a 17 inch square monitor (1280 x 1024).
